I bought this book as part of a long-term study of small unit tactics; the United States Army defines “small unit” as company-size and below. “Gunfighting in Teams” (2013) is a comprehensive guide to achieving the SWAT advantage: teamwork. Infantry combat is a team sport, not an individual event. Eighteen chapters covering the organization, equipping and training of the civilian fire team plus three sample lists (sample armory, sample modest cost armory and sample medical jump bag) along with tidbits from the author's 27 years in law enforcement make this a worthwhile addition to my small unit tactics library. A civilian fire team is three to five trained shooters acting in concert.WARNING: many state laws prohibit paramilitary training. It only takes two people “training with weapons” and “organized as a military” to constitute a felony. Consult with your attorney.
I recommend getting the updated “Armed and Prepared: Team Shooting Tactics for Home Defense” (2014) by the same Joseph Terry. The latter book is better organized and has pictures! That is my excuse for giving this only four stars instead of five.
While vastly superior to the 9mm shotgun that British Home Guard carried in the dark days following Dunkirk, I think that Joseph Terry overestimates the effectiveness of the 410-bore shotgun, especially in pistol format. All the shotgun hunting books I read claim that the .410 shotgun is a 25 yard gun on small game.
Page 63 reads “well-sighted sandbag fighting positions” instead of “well-sited,” a minor gripe – as a combat-area veteran of OIF II (I was rear-echelon and was fortunate enough to miss all the firefights) I understand how labor intensive sandbag emplacements are and how rapidly sandbags deteriorate. One issue in “siting” sand-bagged fighting positions is that if the enemy can see the position, he can bring effective fire on that position. At least two sand bag layers are required to withstand rifle fire.
I can quibble over the history of fire team evolution – the Marine Corps rifle squad has been organized as fire teams since 1943, assuming its current 13-Marine/3 fire-team rifle squad in early 1944. The US Army had its Able/Baker/Charlie elements in its rifle squads as early as 1942—and the fire team was born in the trenches of World War One.
On the other hand, the natural human (and canine) hunting pack is three to five members, just as Terry said. Five seems to be the fracture point when cliques form. Taking into account the neighbors, police and National Guard is only reasonable.
And eventually your civilian fire team will “return to civilization” and have to answer for acts of commission and omission. The prerequisite is surviving until someone re-establishes government services (and control) over your location.

Over all i thought terry did a very good job putting his reasoning and years of training together . His book i thought was well written there were parts that were thought provoking and abit unusual but over all i enjoyed his writings he made for me some very good points like the phychological effects of offensive and defensive actions I can personally testify to that. I still serve in the reserves and battle my own demons. Joseph terrys book for me is what a book on this subject should be informative thought provoking and entertaining. I think mr. Terry did a fine job.I would recommend his book to individuals thinking of training in this area. But as mentioned check your laws first the last time i checked their are only five states left that allow mlitia or paramilitary training. Which is sad because our founding farthers wanted the american people to be like a spartan soldier . Well trained well conditioned and ready to fight at a moments notice.
Just got the book and could not stop reading.
Before the book came, I was pretty happy with my preparations for anything that might come along be it natural disaster or economic breakdown putting our family in danger. I have food, shelter and defensive weapons. As a Vietnam vet with combat experience I am very comfortable with weapons and know how to use them.
I felt ready. That was before I read the book. Now I realize that there are some things that I simply did not fully comprehend and some training that I must complete. Being fully self sufficient is great but I now realize that going it alone is not nearly as secure as I thought it was.
I particularly appreciated the section on defending the home, firing lanes and having a fall-back area in case the situation becomes dire and you have to bug out from your primary dwelling. I need to follow some of the guidelines laid out in the book to reinforce my home and need to formalize a casual relationship with some of my family and neighbors so we can combine our preparations, skills, training and firepower.
Buy this book. Your families safety may depend on the knowledge you will gain.
Perhaps I was more than a little optimistic when I expected something on par with the publications of Gabriel Suarez' works on rifle and handgun shooting. My god, Terry has some sort of fantasy about saving his daughter from being raped by a gang of hoodlums when the power goes out. The whole book reads like some form of Red Dawn-level paranoia. There are firearms enthusiasts, and then there are gun nuts. Then, there's this guy.
A lot of the stuff in this book is sheer nonsense. The "Tactic" of the "mad minute," where you waste a bunch of ammunition to make noise to make your enemies soil themselves and run, is one such absurdity.
Other things seem straight out of the 1990s. For instance, instead of recommending the budget-conscious couch warrior to buy an AK, he reccommends a HiPoint, which is (needless to say) bad advice. Maybe this made sense when you couldn't find an AK that had been made properly, but this is the second decade of the twenty-first century. Get with the times.
I got about fifteen minutes of disappointment from this book, but likely a whole lifetime on the FBI weirdos list. If you want to save yourself either, just burn your fifteen bucks and get the satisfaction of feeling warm.
