After global devastation, the last remnants of Earth sent a handful of colonists of a distant terraformed world to give humanity one last, desperate chance. Unable to provide the technology required for an advanced civilization, the founders instilled in the colonists a strict code of conduct and gave them a few precious imprinting devices glass helmets that contain all of Earth's scientific knowledge.

Once in a generation, the heir to the province of Laal begins the arduous training required to survive the imprinting of the Glass Helm and acquire the knowledge of the lost Earth. But Leland de Laal, the youngest son of one of Agatsu's greatest leaders, has climbed the forbidden rock spire where the Helm is kept and donned it, unaware that its knowledge has a terrible price. To an unprepared mind, it brings madness, agony, and even death.

Helm eBook Steven Gould

I found this a very enjoyable read, if only because of its richly imagined setting and well-paced, engaging plot. However, the writing does seem a little less polished than the top-tier authors, and the editing was substandard. Also, while I'm not as put off by the heavy emphasis on aikido as many other reviewers, it does get a bit distracting how it's kind of treated as a superpower that most of the "good guys" (exclusively) have.

Of course, if I have to choose between superior storytelling and technical excellence in writing/editing, I'll take the former any day of the week, but it's a shame this couldn't have had both.

Helm eBook Steven Gould Reviews

Jumper was half great adventure story, half great coming-of-age story. I must have read it 5 times now I think. Reflex was a great adventure/investigation story and a real page-turner too. [The less said about Griffin's story the better. We know that was not Gould's fault.]

But after that I find Gould's stories losing their lustre.
Wildside spent too much time boring us with aeronautical terminology, and nothing like as much depth on the plot and the whole parallel univers thing as it deserved.
Blind Waves was littered with boring Cussleresque nautical technology and in Helm we get bogged down in martial arts. If Gould would spend less time researching esoteric knowledge and more time developing his stories and characters, he might produce something comparable to Jumper again.
Steven Gould, the master of the “What if?” genre of science fiction, adds a twist to the human story of life in the Middle Ages - if it were a different planet with some of the trappings and knowledge of modern society.
I bought the paperback when it first came out, and it's had many re-readings since. Some don't like the lengthy explanations of akido matches or moves, but I found them interesting. The characters are reasonably well-developed for what seems to be a YA book. Gould isn't too heavy-handed on the moral issues, and it appears he believes in personal responsibility... or at least the positive characters in this story to. Nor does he strain my credulity too strongly or too often. Despite multiple readings, I continue to enjoy the story, which is why I purchased the version of it, so I could carry it in my mobile library.
Gave as a gift to myself, it is one of my favorite books, love the author. I wore out the book I had for years. Glad I could find it in hard back which will last me longer. I've read it about 20 times. and many others by this author.
I only discovered Gould's writing two months ago, when a friend loaned me a copy of "Wildside". Since then I've bought my own copy of that, as well as "Jumper", "Reflex" and "Helm".

"Helm" is the last of the four that I've read. I put "Helm" off until last after seeing so many 4-star reviews of it. I was concerned that it wouldn't be as good, so I read the others first. It turns out there was no need for concern, as to me it rates right up there with the others.

"Helm" contains the same great character building, same light touches of sci-fi technology (enough detail to explain, not so heavy as to bog it down), great pacing, a good mix of heroes/villains, and the same creative vision.

There were some loose ends left at the end. Not major items that leave you feeling like you missed something, but enough to easily build into a sequel - which I hope happens at some point!

Great read - go get it!
I really enjoy most of Steven Gould's books. He has a tendency to delve very deeply into a subject that is technical and introduce the reader to that subject in depth. In this case, the subject is Aikido. I really liked his description of the techniques and his devotion to making sure that the realities of Aikido were well described in the novel. I didn't think the plot was as excellent, though, as his technical description of martial arts and the martial arts way. I thought there were a great number of characters introduced that, at times, were difficult for me to follow (I'm not sure of the reason for this... it doesn't seem like there were as many characters as a series like Game of Thrones, for instance. It might have been something to do with how they were named).

It's worth reading, if for nothing else than the interesting bits about Aikido, it's practices and techniques, and its history.
Steven Gould is a most excellent writer. I have enjoyed everything of his that I've read, and I have re-read most of them (My copy of Wildside has fallen apart, been replaced, and is in danger of falling apart again. Jumper is about to die the first death...).

I haven't finished HELM. I don't want to. I enjoy it too much. I find that I am reading it more slowly, because I don't want it to be over.

There are very few authors whose books I go out and actively look for, and even fewer whose books I have to replace because I've reread them enough to fall apart (Heinlein, Bujold, John Steakly, Chris Pourteau). Two of Gould's books....

Get his stuff. Read his stuff. You won't be let down.
